The 602 That Came in From the Cold

One of the top news stories lately has been the merger between Sabre / Travelocity and Preview Travel - two companies representing 467 million USD in joint online travel sales in the first half of 1999.

The "funny" part is how many journalists do sing "Online Survival of the Largest" in unison, high toned like a castrato choir which has already forgotten their basic Darwin. But its still not the largest who survived in H.C. Darwins fairy tale about the three brothers' Evolution - it was the "Fittest" who got the princess and half the kingdom in the end...

Or do I once again have to remind you about the dinosaurs - or more recently the unbeatable MS-osaur who got bitten in his Achilles' heel by a small penguin coming from the deep forests just south of Santa Claus' home factory?

The very reliable Andover News Network reported the merger October 4th - I got same news plus some more in what I consider the most important news source for travel professionals. This is a Belgian site that gave you a weekly newsletter; now it's daily and I recommend all who want a bit of "behind-the-scene-and-sometimes-before-the-curtain-opens" news - to subscribe. It's free and it's, as I said, what I believe is the best single news source for any travel professional - find it all here!

To the mergre again - for me the most important information imbedded in this news story was the new estimation of growth in online travel purchases which is projected to grow from $7.8 billion in 1999 to $32.1 billion by 2004. No source given in Andover - but I have no problem believing this.

So this becomes once again one of my eternal warnings to travel professionals who believe they sit comfortable behind their off line desks - so please repeat after me if you are an offline travel agent:
"I-will-not-sit-comfortably-very-long-in-my- offline-chair...".

As an travel professional, your existing skills and knowledge will still be needed tomorrow - but you need new tools in communication. In times to come more and more clients will come to you via your Internet door, and fewer and fewer via your office door!

Today I will present you for an alternative to the ram eating MS Office which many believe is standard and a "must".

It seems that we are in the fairy tale mode today, so let us start:
Once upon a time, before the fall of the symbol of a divided Europe - the Berlin Wall - the No. 1 Eastern European software house was born in Czechoslovakia and got "602" as it's birth number (license number)- thus giving it the name "Software602". Soon it totally dominated the market in East Europe - but after the "fall of the wall" - Microsoft came in and took their share of the market, together with Coca Cola, Levis and other fancy dressed Western princes...
