WWW War II

from the Pizza archives

Who has not heard of the browser war ? Still browsers have to be considered "gadgets" compared with the real tool that is the foundation of the World Wide Web War II - electronic mail.

- In 1998 the USA alone sent more email than the whole world together sent "normal" mail...

- In a time when email is cheapest and most globally accessible form of communication...

- In a time when overfilled postboxes have been replaced with email spam...

This is the start of WWWW II - fairly "fresh", but soon to overshadow totally the now so famous "browser war". In this new war, spam protection has become air and land defence, and sophisticated mass mailers becomes the advanced attack weapons.

Let us just define this a bit - to make understandable the concepts that are used;

Email "Client" (- Civil life)

Email "Bulk / Mass" (- the Attacking force)

Email "Spam fighters" (- the Defence force)

You might find it hard to believe me, thinking this is just a journalistic bending of the reality. Then have a look at some names used for existing bulk/mass email programs; "AVALANCHE" - "BULK E" - "CAMPAIGN" - "E-TARGET" - "E-MASS" - "GOLDRUSH" - "GroupMASTER" - "MailCAST" - "MailSHOT" - "MASSMail".

Or do you want it more direct? Try then to have a look at the email programs as "READY AIM FIRE" (RAF) or the "Stealth Email BOMBER" (- as the company says, "E-mail straight through barriers!")

(Please note that all mass mailer programs or users are NOT spammers - but this is a fact that we will come back to!)

Where do the spammers get your email address from? The options are many - here I will just take an example from a company that manufactures such good (dangerous?) products that even ZDNet has given top 5 star ratings to two of them, as you will see here.

One of the products from the same company - RETRIEVE or EXTRACT email address from any Web site (it be Yahoo, Suite101.com or your business/personal site) - extract them by keywords from Internet Search Engines or Newsgroups. Have a look at this specialised war machine!

Or see the same extractor combined with 3 other war machines in one program.

Such attacks need, of course, the best possible defense weapons, - and war it is, as I told you from the start... So let us have a look at what names "defence" email programs have got;
