Hello, independent wrestling fans! And welcome to another edition of Independent Pro Wrestling! On tap for this month's article: a look at Mr. Monday Night Rob Van Dam!
Rob Van Dam is definitely one of the premier and most sought-after wrestlers on the indy circuit. He has been on the WWF's Monday Night Raw Is War a few times (he was not under contract with the WWF, he was part of the ECW/WWF relationship) and has been rumored to be backstage at several prominent WCW events. It's a known fact that Mr. Monday Night has several friends in the WWF and WCW and certainly could go to either fed if he wanted to, but instead chooses to stay with ECW. I think that is hurting his career. His loyalty to ECW is something that is very rare in the wrestling business and he should be commended for being so loyal. But Chris Benoit is also loyal to WCW and look where it got him. Sting is loyal to WCW and look where he is at? Stuck with a world title reign that no one remembers and forced down to being a mid carder. Granted, ECW does not screw their wrestlers over like WCW does, but still ECW may not be the best place for Van Dam to be able to showcase his talents to the world. ECW is not available in many places beyond the East Coast in the US and is not available in other countries and it is bound to be a long time before it does get broadcast in other countries. Its PPV universe is bigger than it was last year but still most of the world does not that ECW exists and fewer know who Rob Van Dam is. Maybe it would be in Mr. Monday Night's best interest to move to a bigger fed so he can showcase his awesome aerial abilities to the world. He is a great wrestler and some see him as the next Shawn Michaels. He definitely has the charisma and the heart to be a great wrestler and to be headlining main event shows in either the WWF or WCW in the next 5-10 years. So Mr. Monday Night may be happy in ECW right now, but if ECW does not get national coverage and garner more coverage in the world soon, Mr. Monday Night may end up soon to be not a has-been, but sadly, a never-was.
