1998 The Year in Review

1998 had to be the year that independents began their rise back to glory.

A few years ago, small regional feds were all but dead. Gobbled up by the conglomerate WWF, regional feds are now just starting to make a comeback. But when they started to make their comeback, fans weren't going becuase they saw them as places where old has been wrestlers plied their trade.

But this year was the year that regional feds began to draw fans again. The small feds began more agressive advertising. The WWF started sending scouts to the small feds and drawing new young talent from them. Fans saw this and decided to check out their local feds, in the hopes of seeing some decent wrestling action from tomorrow's stars. And they got that and a whole lot more.

The fans got some great angles, local wrestling talent and some great young athletes on the cusp of greatness. The NWA started acquiring contracts with some of the local feds and sending some of their nationally known talent, to wrestle on a few cards. This drew new fans who saw some great wrestling and came back for more. Several of the local feds got on local television and started running more and drawing more, with the NWA backing them.

There were a few setbacks. The NWA's 50th Anniversary show, didn't go off quite as planned and their relationship with ECW, the most well known indy fed in the US, is dead in the water. But even with those setbacks, 1998 was a great year for small local feds. They cameback from almost near devastation and there is no end in sight.

1999 looks to be even bigger than 1998 and I will be right there to witness it all. Happy New Year everyone!
