Abortion law may punish doctors

The Supreme Court agreed on Jan. 9 to decide whether states may ban a surgical procedure commonly known as partial-births abortions.

The court will review the Nebraska law making it illegal for a doctor to perform this procedure. A federal appeals court blocked enforcement of law saying it was unconstitutional. Courts have blocked similar laws in 30 states. The federal ban Congress enacted on partial-birth abortions was vetoed by President Bill Clinton.

The Supreme Court has not issued a major ruling on abortion since 1992 when it upheld its 1973 Roe vs. Wade decision, which gives women the right to chose to have a legal abortion.

Pro-choice groups are concerned about the court's decision as it could either protect or erode abortion rights depending on what each state decides.
