Soap Opera tackles the abortion issueAn ABC soap opera dealt with the controversial issue of abortion. General Hospital's Carly, played by Sarah Brown, debates whether or not she should terminate her pregnancy. In true daytime fashion, Carly is pregnant by a man other then her husband. She unsuccessfully attempts to get her husband, AJ, to make love to her. Growing desperate about dealing with her unexpected pregnancy she decides the only answer is an abortion. At the clinic, the staff explains the procedure and offers her alternative options. The writers did an incredible job with Carly going over all the possibilities. At the last minute she decides she can not go through with it. She tells her mother it is because she can only think of her son. She then thanks her mother, Bobbie, for putting her up for adoption and giving her life. Brown told Soap Opera Digest, "this abortion clinic stuff is some of the most interesting (storyline) that I have read. It's cutting edge for daytime and it's written very well." This writer agrees for the issue of pro-choice is not about having abortions but have the right to choose. This is not the first time General Hospital dealt with the issue of abortion. In 1976 after being raped Lesley came as close as Carly did to having an abortion. The pregnancy instead ended in a miscarriage. In 1984, Bobbie had a hysterectomy that was explained at the time as being linked to abortions she'd had in the past.
