Author of Roe vs. Wade diesRetired Supreme Court Justice Harry A. Blackmun died on March 4, 1999. He was 90 years old. Blackmun once told the Associated Press he hoped after serving 24 years on the Supreme Court people would view him as "a good worker" and someone who "contributed generally to the advancement of the law." Instead most people remember him as the Supreme Court Justice who wrote the decision for Roe vs. Wade on Jan. 22, 1973. The decision legalized abortion in the United States. Blackmun knew he would be criticized for his written decision, but he was a person of judicial integrity and wanted to do what was just and fair. At the start of his tenure on the Supreme Court people called him conservative, later he was called a liberal. Blackmun, himself, always felt he was somewhere in between, reports the Associated Press. Blackmun was a magna cum laude mathematics graduate from Harvard. He served as general cousel to the Mayor Clinic for many years. For more on Roe vs Wade see: http://vh1398.infi.net/kr/roevwade/html/... http://www.geocities.com/CaptiolHill?lob...
