A Tribute to Lu HallThis month's information is dedicated to the memory of a woman I never had the privilege of meeting in person. My only contact with her was through emails and phone calls. Every one was a positive experience for me. I feel honored to have known her, if only through modern day communication methods. I envy those who knew her in the flesh. What an honor for each of you. Lu Hall was an integral part of the SSA as well as being an important element in the lives of primates, human and non-human alike. Her passing left emptiness beyond mortal words. I intend to fill that emptiness as fully as possible with everything Lu stood for. Education to promote the well being of all non-human primates in captivity in private situations, being first and foremost on the list. I am in hopes the list will grow steadily as did Lu's dedication to the SSA, it's membership and non-human primates. Lu's caring went way beyond just our organization. She was always willing to lend an ear, offer a suggestion or share her experiences with anyone who asked. It never mattered if the questions came during daylight hours or in the quiet stillness of late night, Lu was willing to help. She is truly an inspiration to us all. Rest in Peace, Lu. We love you! Words of Wisdom Lu Hall shared with me: “I have known of cases of a member saying in court, or making a plea not to change their town rules, "I am a member of SSA, an organisation founded 43 years ago -----" and it making a big difference in their credibility. I have no problem if Joe calls his monk a "pet" and I call mine "family" and you call yours ‘wild creature’. As long as you/we are doing our best to keep that monk in a healthy, enriched, life time, protected environment. The Simian, and the Journal, has given us help to do that. The Journal and the Handbook has given the SSA a much needed boost. Now we need to get together, get organized and get GOING to help each other and each monkey, and protect our right to have these wonderful ‘family members’.” "I'm sure you know how many people are sitting out there all alone with this monkey they bought at a exotic animal sale or from their cousins boyfriend...thank God maybe they run into someone that gives them the SSA information. Or they get on the internet and stumble on SSA. Every small step we help them to improve is a big plus for that monkey--whether it is diet, Vet care, larger caging, etc. (one lady said "oh I never thought about giving him toys") Or perhaps contacting one of us when they have to give that monk up."
