CARING FOR MARMOSETS AND TAMARINS
· Marmosets and Tamarins should be provided with a companion. · It has been said that a natural habitat, and the opportunity to carry out normal behavior patterns, strengthens the immune system of Marmosets and Tamarins. · It is important that New World Primates have access to natural, unfiltered sunlight as a source of vitamin D3, which allows the body to properly utilize calcium. Deficiencies can result in metabolic bone diseases such as rickets. Primates without access to sunlight should be supplemented with VITALIGHTS. This is given orally in addition to the commercial diet. · Marmosets and Tamarins need to be kept warm, especially at night as the body temperature will drop by 4 degrees while they are asleep. · Do not kiss your monkey on the lips. Herpes virus infections, including the common cold sore can be transmitted to the animal from humans and may be fatal. Most herpes viruses cause lesions on the lips, palate, cheeks and gums. Other illnesses, such as diarrhoes, hepatitis, measles, mumps and chicken pox can be transmitted. · Diapering Marmosets and Tamarins restricts scent marking. · If you suspect that your monkey is not well, provide plenty of fluids and keep him warm.
A TIP!!
Place treats in a traveling box regularly - this will greatly reduce stress if the monkey has to travel (to the vet etc). The monkey will enter the traveling box at once looking for treats and there will be no struggle to capture him.
