With the recent threat of hurricane Floyd behind us it is important for anyone with primates to have an emergency plan in case of the need to evacuate. (loss of electricity for any length of time or should a fire start in your home and/or facility, or perhaps even the potential Y2K problems). Some of the basics on a "human's" needs list would be applicable to your monkeys as well. Below is a list of items to keep on hand in the event of an emergency:
Extra species specific food - chow, Nutrical, non-perishables, medication (if necessary) A basic first aid kit for monkeys includes: Latex gloves, scissors, adhesive tape, gauze pads/roll bandages, triple antibiotic topical ointment (like Bacitracin), heating pad or ceramic heat coil lamp, several sizes of towels, tweezers/forceps, cotton swabs, non-stick Telfa-pads, powdered Gatorade, Pepto-Bismol, Ensure, Pedialyte, Betadine, Hydrogen peroxide, Tylenol Liquid for Children, flavored Tums, Robitussin for children, baby food (apple and banana), digital thermometer with a Flexi-tip, K-Y jelly for thermometer lubricant Tranquilizers and syringes (under a veterinarian's direction) Travel (carrier) cages for each monkey (it is important to have your monkey accustomed to being in a travel cage both visits to the veterinarian and for emergencies) Heavy clothes and gloves Blankets (thick and large) especially important if you live in a colder climate and lose power resulting in heat loss Trash receptacles (container and trash bags) Flashlight and extra batteries Duct tape Rope Small kerosene heater and kerosene (make sure there is adequate ventilation) Generator (if at all possible) If you have your monkeys on a lead with a lock or in a locked cage **BE SURE YOU ALWAYS CARRY THE KEY WITH YOU** and/or have one available (easily accessible) for whomever might need to move the monkey. Waist belts or harnesses and leads should be kept in close proximity of each monkey Fire extinguishers (fully charged ones!!) Functional smoke detectors **HAVE A PLAN IN MIND** for any emergency that might arise for your peace of mind and your monkeys safety!
