Primate Facilities

Facilities housing primates run the gamut of slovenly shacks to elaborate environments and humble abodes in between. The important consideration is the well being of the primates. Fancy does not necessarily mean best. Simple habitats that are functional suit a primate just fine. Environmental enrichment and space is important as well as safe and easy maintenance for a primate's home.

The materials used in building a habitat are varied, depending on materials and finances available. Zoos have upgraded their facilities over the years, a far cry from the ancient jail-like cells that once housed such majestic creatures such as the great apes and other exotics. Sanctuaries caring for the homeless, unwanted throwaway primates are usually not as fortunate to have access to the finances needed for building splendid natural looking habitats. The best they generally can offer these displaced animals is safe, clean fairly spacious accommodations, but even this is often a big improvement to the previous space they lived in.

Private primate caretakers have continued to educate themselves and share personal experiences in order to provide satisfactory conditions for the animals dependent upon them. Inside and outside facilities are the norm for most primates in their care. Many people build wonderful habitats independently of any rules or regulations.

USDA, United States Department of Agriculture has jurisdiction over facilities that are open to the public. Specific requirements have been developed over the years and are continually updated to provide the best possible accommodations for all types of animals, including primates. Their website may be accessed at: "http://www.aphis.usda.gov/" to find out more about their role in this scheme of things.
