Born Early: A Children's Book On Premature Birth

Dealing with a premature birth can be a difficult experience for everyone involved, especially a small child. Siblings may not understand why their tiny brother or sister cannot come home, or why their parents spend so much time in the hospital. Answering a young person's persistent questions may not be an easy task. Born Early: A premature baby's story for children, written by Lida Lafferty and Bo Flood, offers help. The book combines clear explanations with large photographs, to paint an accurate picture of one preemie's journey through life in the NICU.

Although the book presents the case of a reasonably healthy preemie, thus avoiding descriptions of various complications, it does provide a general look at what it means to be born early. The writers present their information matter-of-factly, and positively. Some parents, especially those with a very sick infant, may believe the picture it paints is too rosy; however, I believe that the book would serve well as a jumping-off point to a discussion about your particular situation.

The story follows "Carrie" through her traumatic birth and hospital stay. Carrie's parents are introduced, as well as her little brother, who is anxious for her arrival. The book describes many procedures preemies undergo, without being too graphic or too frightening. Large, clear photographs show Carrie as she progresses through the NICU. The story ends when Carrie leaves the hospital, going home with her parents and younger brother.

Carrie's story is followed by two pages of pictures of former preemies. "Guess what?" the page proclaims, "We were all preemies! Were you a preemie too?"

Born Early is beautifully done and gives parents a wonderful resource for teaching children about premature birth. I obtained a copy of the book through my local library. Unfortunately, the volume has been rebound, and I can find little publishing information. According to my copy, Born Early was published by Songbird Publishing in Grand Junction, Colorado. If you have seen it anywhere else, please let me know.
