My baby is breech...What are my options?

Question: I am expecting my first baby and am 35 weeks pregnant. At my last appointment, my doctor told me my baby is frank breech and that if it didn't turn on its own by 37-38 weeks, he would want to try to turn the baby. He called it an external cephalic version (ECV). What can I do to help my baby turn head down?

Answer: There are some things that may be worth trying to turn your baby, but I would discuss thm with your doctor first before trying them. I've had friends, family members, childbirth education students and doula clients have success with sound/light therapy, hot and cold therapy, the slant board technique, the pelvic tilt and Webster's technique. I've also seen these techniques not work. I've also seen success with ECV and have also seen emergency cesarean births as a direct result of ECV. This is all anecdotal of course and there was nothing scientific about it but it has been interesting nonetheless. Some of these moms whose babies did not turn to a vertex presentation had vaginal breech births and some had cesarean births simply for a breech presentation.

Connie Banack, who is a doula and also president of the International Cesarean Awareness Network, has a fantastic web page that describes a number of breech turning techniques, including external cephalic version (ECV), mobility, relaxation and visualization, sound/light therapy, hypnosis, hot and cold therapy, deep water immersion, aromatherapy, homeopathy, acupuncture and acupressure, moxibustion, Webster's technique (this is a chiropractic technique), the pelvic tilt and the slant-board exercise.
