"Mehndi" is a traditional method of body painting that uses henna to dye the skin, releasing a copper colored pigment that lasts for 10 days to three weeks. The art of henna decorating has been around for approximately four to six thousand years. It has been practiced in Northern Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, Europe, and Southeast Asia, and has been used by Hindus, Sikhs, Jews, Moslems, Christians, Pagans, and others.
Mehndi art is wonderful gift for yourself. A special pregnancy art project to do as your birth date approaches, Mehndi is a wonderful temporary tattoo art for your pregnant belly or wherever you would like to celebrate your blessed event! To Westerners, henna decorating is foreign but the circumstances under which it is employed often have parallels to events and rituals in which they participate. Some examples of event and ritual parallels between the American and the North African/Middle-Eastern/South Asian cultures include physical adornment, female camaraderie, luck and protection, pregnancy and birth, engagement and wedding preparations. Henna decorating is already taking American pop-culture by storm, thanks to Madonna's "Ray of Light" video in 1998. As more is learned about it, similar customs and symbolism may be adopted in the great cultural melting pot of the United States, preserved, and passed on eventually to be part of the world culture at large. Private sessions and henna parties are a great way to have fun with henna. Whether it's a pregnancy celebration or just a casual get-together, henna adds a special touch! Contact your local tattoo or henna artist for more details about henna parties or private sessions. Check out http://www.mehndibodyart.com for more information on mehndi kits you can use at home.
