My work with expectant and new parents has revealed that many of them are combining the use of traditional medicine with complimentary or alternative therapies like chiropractic care, aromatherapy, massage therapy, yoga, meditation and herbal remedies, to name a few. This trend toward "combination treatment" is gradually accelerating due to the demand for complementary or alternative care. In fact, 40 percent of 1,035 randomly selected patient survey respondents said they used some form of alternative health care within the past year, according to a report by John A. Astin, PhD, a researcher at Stanford Hospital in Stanford, Calif., in the Journal of the American Medical Association (1998; 279:1548-1553).
