I am often asked by couples about what to bring to the hospital when it is time for the baby to be born. I often suggest that parents pack two small bags: a labor bag for the labor and birth and a postpartum bag with items for mother and baby after the birth.
While some labor suites are vast and roomy, some are quite cramped. When you decide where you are giving birth, take a tour and look at the size of the room you will be in, both for labor and for your postpartum stay. Think about what items you want to bring to the hospital and what will fit in these rooms. Are you going to be guaranteed a private room? If not, keep in mind that you may not be able to spread out like you might want to. Compound your stuff with lots of visitors, flowers and gifts, and it gets crowded really fast! Bring your labor bag with you when you come to the hospital for your birth. Your postpartum bag can stay in the car until after your birth. For your labor bag: 2 or more bed pillows. Hospitals are notoriously short on pillows. Be sure you are using pillowcases that you don't mind getting soiled with blood, amniotic fluid, vomit or other body fluids. SMALL tape or CD player with your favorite music Hand Fan Lip Balm Toothbrush and toothpaste for mom Food for the support person Suckers or hard candy for the mother Cards, books, videos, video games or other time passers Change for vending machines and pay phone Reading and writing material Important phone numbers Watch or clock with a second hand One or two pairs of socks that you don't mind getting soiled Focal Point-could be a picture or a favorite stuffed animal Tennis balls in a sock for back massage Camera and film or video recorder Slippers and bathrobe for mom For your postpartum bag Change of clothes for support person Going home clothes for mom and baby Your own pads, probably the kind with the adhesive strip is best.
