Preparing For Pregnancy: Are You Ready?

© Lori Ramsey

In the past several months I’ve done a series of “Preparing for Pregnancy” articles. Though it is probably an unattainable goal to have all your ducks in a row before conceiving; it would be nice to at least know what you’re facing, which is the purpose of this series of articles. If you haven’t already done so, go back and read through the entire series. At least that way you’ll have some food for thought.

We have covered an array of topics all concerning pregnancy. In summarizing…

Costs Of Pregnancy. By now you should be aware of the astronomical cost a pregnancy can be. If you have insurance make sure you can cover the co-pays and deductibles. If you don’t have insurance then make arrangements with your physician and hospital to make payments. Remember that most physicians and hospitals want the entire bill paid by the 7th month of pregnancy.

Health, Weight and Exercise. It is important to be in top physical shaped before conceiving your baby. Remember not to start an exercise regimen after you have conceived – the best time to start exercising is before.

Maternity Needs. It is a fact that pregnancy will bring about a vast amount of changes to your body. Be prepared by allowing for growth in your wardrobe. You may be able to wear your regular clothes for the first few months, however you will reach a point where the need to expand will come about. Also included in this article are some tips in being comfortable during those expansive months.

High Risk Factors. Whether you have preexisting chronic conditions or they crop up during pregnancy, it is best met with knowledge and education. Just because you may have a chronic physical illness or one that might occur during pregnancy doesn’t mean that your pregnancy can go as planned. With today’s medical treatments, most women can safely carry a baby to term regardless of their state of health.

Baby’s Needs. Whether you go ahead and purchase what your baby needs now, or wait until you are pregnant, this is something worthy of considering. It is my belief that aside from the cost of education, the baby’s first year is the most expensive in terms of “things” needed. Best to plan ahead and at least know what’s coming up.

Doctor or Midwife. This is an area that you should already know what you are going to do. In the most ideal situation you would have interviewed and seen the doctor or midwife well before pregnancy occurs. If not, many women have changed their minds well up into the third trimester of pregnancy (I did!).
