The time to start thinking about your health, weight and exercise is before pregnancy occurs. During pregnancy is not the time to lose weight or to start a new exercise program. It’s important to maintain these specifics before conception occurs. Make an appointment with your physician to discuss your weight (if you are over- or underweight) and the possible diet and exercise plans to get you in shape for pregnancy.

If you are over- or underweight – now is the time to diet accordingly to get to your more ideal weight. Your ideal weight will depend upon your height, bone structure, etc. http://www.thusness.com/bmi.t.html This link will calculate your body mass index. Be sure to be completely off any diets before conceiving – even if it means to postpone getting pregnant until your weight is where you want it. Discuss this with your physician, they can offer advice and tips on your healthy weight.

Please note that it’s okay to be overweight or underweight and still conceive. Most people today are not at their “ideal” weight anyway. Just be sure to not diet – especially don’t take any over-the-counter or prescription diet medications while actively trying to conceive. The safest route is to diet and lose the weight first, and then maintain a healthy diet from all the food groups. With a healthy diet and exercise you should be well prepared for pregnancy.

Exercise is good for you. However, if you find yourself pregnant before starting an exercise program – it is not a good time to begin. Exercising is best done before pregnancy occurs and then continued after and throughout the pregnancy. If you were to wait to start an exercise program after conception occurs – you will be taxing your body too much. Pregnancy is very tiring and for an unexercised body especially so. The importance in starting the exercise program before conception occurs is to help you to be able to carry it out throughout the pregnancy. This will make for an easier labor and delivery too. Always check with your physician before starting a new exercise regimen.

It’s important to be in good health as you are trying to conceive. That’s why a good physical exam would benefit you before pregnancy occurs. Your doctor will discuss your weight, your health and recommend any exercise that will be beneficial to get you on the road to pregnancy.
