If you’ve had the misfortune of suffering a miscarriage, you no doubt know the pain and heartbreak of losing a baby – no matter how early or late the miscarriage was. If you were trying to get pregnant in the first place, then you’re number one question will probably be “when can I try to conceive again?”
The answer depends on several things. First, how far along were you when the miscarriage occurred? Second, why did the miscarriage happen? Third, did you have a D & C? And fourth, what is your doctor’s opinion? Before I go on let me say that it is important to follow your doctor’s advice. If they give you advice you don’t quite agree with or understand, ask them to explain what they mean. The average amount of time to allow trying again after a miscarriage is 6 weeks to 3 months. This is to give your body and hormones a chance to heal from the miscarriage. Usually it can take up to 6 weeks for your menstrual cycle to return after a miscarriage. However, the reproductive cycle can swing back as normal right away too. Ovulation can occur within 2 weeks of a miscarriage. Is it possible to get pregnant right away after a miscarriage? The answer is yes, and this is one answer I personally know about. On April 4, 1997 I found out I was pregnant. I was probably only about 4 weeks along. On April 6, 1997 I had a miscarriage. Though this wasn’t a planned pregnancy – it still broke my heart and though I planned on trying again in 3 months – I conceived right away. By May 6, 1997 I found out I was pregnant with my daughter which would have put me conceiving around 2 weeks after the miscarriage. Because I had gotten pregnant right away, my doctor did a transvaginal ultrasound at 7 weeks to insure that the baby was developing okay. And my baby did. My daughter was born at 36 weeks (just 6 days past the miscarried baby’s due date) – perfect and healthy in every way. I feel I was blessed to have a healthy pregnancy right after the miscarriage. The chances of having another miscarriage go up after already having one. I would caution about actively trying to conceive right after a miscarriage in order to allow your body to heal properly. However if it does happen, chances are good that you can go on to have a healthy pregnancy and baby with proper medical care. Go To Page: 1 2
