The Ovuscope is an ovulation saliva monitor or microscope. It's in the same family as the Ovu-Tec, Fertile Focus, and Ovulite. Each of these monitors are lip-stick case shaped microscopes.
Ease of use. The lid screws to the base. In order to take a reading, the lid has to be unscrewed, then the focus lens is unscrewed revealing the built-in glass specimen lens. A sample of saliva, taken first thing in the morning before eating or drinking, needs to be smeared across the specimen lens then allowed to air dry for about five minutes. After the saliva is dry, screw the focus lens back onto the base and peer into the eye piece. Adjust the focus lens both ways while depressing the light button to either see dots, transition, or ferns. It's important to adjust the lens both ways, because there have been times when I would see what I thought was just dots, only to keep adjusting the lens to see the ferns. Once the reading has been made, you unscrew the focus lens and clean the specimen lens with a damp soft cloth and/or a bit of water. The Ovuscope shows a ferning pattern about 48 to 72 hours prior to ovulation. If a woman has irregular cycles, she may likely see the ferns more often as her body attempts to ovulate several times. It's common to see ferns towards the end of the cycle too, as this indicates either the coming of a new cycle or possibly pregnancy. This is because the same hormones (LH and estrogens) that produce the ferns are also present at the end of the cycle to bring on a new cycle, and is also present during pregnancy. The Ovuscope is not to be used as a form of birth control according to the company that makes it. However, I personally use this type of monitor as birth control in conjunction with fertility charting and paying very close attention to my fertility signs. The Ovuscope is as accurate as any other ovulation saliva microscope. It's the presence of ferns that alerts to possibly fertility. The magnification of the lens if 58 times with a resolution of 500 lines per mm. It comes equipped with a carrying case, lightbulb and two small watch-sized batteries and a one year warranty.
