Fertility Product Review: OvuTec Fertility Detector

© Lori Ramsey

The Ovu-Tec Fertility Detector as found here at http://www.ovutec.com is an ovulation microscope. Shaped like a tube of lipstick, this little microscope is easy to use and stores away discreetly. Ovu-Tec was among the first of the ovulation microscopes to hit the market. There are many brands out there today mimicking the Ovu-Tec's technology and design.

Ovu-Tec is also referred to as "The Pocket Microscope". This is due its lipstick case shape and its ability to fit discreetly inside a pocket.

The Ovu-Tec has plastic casing, with a glass lens, a light bulb and 2 little batteries. To use the Ovu-Tec, you merely remove the cap and the lens, place a small amount of saliva onto the lens, allow the lens to dry for about five. Once the saliva has dried, replace the lens onto the unit and push the light button while holding it up to your eye. The lens sharpness can be adjusted by turning it slightly to the right or left. Once you see the reading, either no ferns which is blank or dots, transition which is dots and some ferns or solid ferns, you record it for reference.

The idea is that a woman's saliva will show a ferning pattern when dried about 48 hours prior to ovulation. The absence of ferns means that you are not fertile. Seeing a pattern of dots and ferns is called transition and this means that ovulation will take place in about 3 to 6 days. Normally when the ferns are present, this is the most fertile time. A woman with an irregular cycle may see the ferning patterns more than once during the cycle. This is due to the ovaries attempting to ovulate at several different times.

The Ovu-Tec Fertility Detector comes with a limited lifetime warranty, most of the other saliva microscopes on the market come with a one-year warranty. This alone, makes the Ovu-Tec one of the best sellers at Beyond Fertility.com.

I have used the Ovu-Tec for over three years now and have never had to replace the light bulb or the battery. The only issue I have with it is that the batteries become dirty and have to be cleaned with a dry cloth in order for the unit to work. This happens once or twice a month for me. However, some don't run into this problem and use the unit care-free for years.

*NOTE, we quit carrying the OvuTecs due to having too many problems with recent purchases and customer complaints. While the unit I have owned has worked out well, I've had too many complaints on purchases made since then (2002) and have decided to quit carrying them.
