Danceable Doom: Sisters Of Mercy

Think that's a oxymoron? Perhaps. Yet take a listen to the album's lead track, the previously unreleased "Under the Gun." The duet between a particularly morose (even for him) Eldritch and Berlin's Terri Nunn, the song is almost tender, but never loses its sights on the Sisters' ultimate design: to craft compelling rock and roll that is influenced by, but never a slave to, the gothic template.

The sentiments of "Under the Gun," that our love affairs and struggles of every kind are dark - but do not extinguish our hope - is the secret behind Sisters of Mercy. Doom can be danceable, and it can certainly be cathartic. Experiencing that sonic oxymoron has been one of the great thrills of my post-punk experience.
