Preparing for Successful Breastfeeding

© Shari Green

Many women are surprised to discover that breastfeeding doesn't always "come naturally"--that it can take planning, preparation, and persistence! If you have made the decision to breastfeed your child, there are things you can do now to lay the foundation for a successful breastfeeding relationship with your baby. Perhaps the two most crucial things are educating yourself and building a support network.

One thing I recommend is that you attend a breastfeeding class taught by a qualified lactation consultant. These are often available at the hospital or through your childbirth educator. While there are many good breastfeeding books available, nothing can replace one-on-one teaching. (For example, a knowledgeable instructor can help you learn proper "position and latch" for baby, which can mean the difference between breastfeeding being pleasurable or painful.) However, I still recommend that you get and read a decent book on breastfeeding--it can be an extremely valuable resource for you. Some of the best breastfeeding books available are:

  • The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding by La Leche League
  • The Nursing Mother's Companion by Kathleen Huggins
  • Bestfeeding: Getting Breastfeeding Right for You by Mary Renfrew, Chloe Fisher, and Suzanne Arms
  • The Breastfeeding Book by Martha Sears and William Sears

I also urge you to build a relationship with someone who can be a "breastfeeding mentor", someone who has successfully breastfed and is supportive of your desire to nurse. In past generations, this was easy--parenting involved extended family to a much greater extent, and women grew up surrounded by aunts, sisters, etc., who breastfed their babies. These days, it may be that a new mother does not know many women who can fill the roll of a mentor. If you can not find a mentor, there are other options.

One of the best places for both accurate advice and understanding support is La Leche League. Trained leaders, who are also mothers experienced with breastfeeding, meet regularly to instruct and support nursing moms, and leaders are also available by phone to help resolve problems you may encounter. La Leche League welcomes expectant mothers as well, so even before your baby is born, you can benefit from their support and expertise.

I wish you success in searching out information and support. Both will go a long way in helping you have a mutually satisfying breastfeeding relationship with your child.

Best wishes!
