For those of you who live in sunny, warm weather most of the year your trip to the Algarve will just be another reason to buy sunscreen and designer sunglasses while sipping a glass of wine and enjoying a plate of grilled fish and salad. For those of us who are daily peering out the window hoping the winter will go away, our trip to the Algarve will be a welcome change from the cold, the rain, the days that alternate from warm to freezing. We'll take two bottles of red wine and double servings of grilled meats, fish and a big helping of salad. After all, the hot weather is short where we come from. We may aswell make the most of it. Welcome to the Algarve! Sunny beaches of white sands and coastlines of blue water. Here you'll find resort hotels that will cater to you like royality. Here you can mellow out in a teeny weeny bikini while sipping an ice cold drink or languishing in a cafe drinking small cups of thick coffee and sweet pastries. Here you can stare out at cloudless skies and smell the calming aroma of grilled tuna, dig into Caldeiradas of mixed fish such as mussels, shrimp, decorated with rice and lemon peel. Or maybe you'd prefer to try grilled pork prepared with cubed potatoes. Rice is served with such delicacies such as octopus (really delicious in spite its name)or maybe if all you want is soup, try a hearty soup make of tomatoes, bread, cucumber, oregano and water. The Algarve is known for its enormous choice regarding fish meals. Here you'll be able to find shrimp, lobster, salmon and other local varieties. As for sweets try cakes made of almonds, eggs, figs, and cinnamon. Corn pudding made of cornflour and water that resembles a pudding is deliciously accompanied by honey as a quick dessert. And to wash it all down .....dry white and red wines from the Lagoa region and a Licoroso de Tavira ( a sweet red wine) from Adega de Tavira. For now let's just lie around and soak up the sun a little longer before we find our way to another gastronomic paradise in our travels through Portugal.
