In Canada, we have just concluded our first food-related celebration known as Thanksgiving, Oct. 11. There was turkey, mixed salad, stuffing, pumpkin pie, mashed potatoes, gravy and the wine flowed. But since we are primarily a portuguese family, there was also the addition of baked sweet potatoes, caldo verde (a green kale soup with chorico) and pudin flan ( a molded custard with a thin caramel sauce). While we raved the traditional dishes associated with Thanksgiving, the Canadian contingent of our family feasted on the Portuguese contributions with just as much enthusiasm and appetite.
This brings me to the topic of Celebrations which will be a series of articles on the Feast days, Festivals, Holy Days and Holidays where food becomes a very important part of the way people spend their day in Portugal and Brazil. I will discuss the foods involved, the preparation and even slip in a few recipes to tantalize those who might like to add a little Portuguese or Brazilian flavor to their next holiday. The series will alternate between Continental Portuguese festivities and Brazilian celebrations. I hope you will find it a great way to get the holiday season started as we make our way towards Christmas and beyond to the next millennium. Go To Page: 1
