Your own Portuguese prof

It is always heartening to find generous and helpful educators prepared to benefit teachers and students by publishing their work free on the net.

Professor Jota (prof.J.Joao Campagnaro) has published his highly useful Gramatica da lingua portuguesa in order to provide an authoritative reference for Portuguese grammar, not only as used in Portugal and Brazil, but also to help students of the language everywhere Portuguese is spoken.

This is not a beginner's site unless your native language is Portuguese and you are simply brushing up on grammar rules.

Laid out as if on a blackboard ( um quadro-negro ), the left hand column holds the index. After the introduction and the rationale behind the book, there is a section on the author, and dedications - all most interesting.

The Assunto lists all the grammar points to be covered - and yes, I do know the rules for accentuation but sometimes find it difficult to reproduce the accents on screen, sorry.

There are exercises, tests, and dicas, hints on studying and taking exams, again all highly helpful. This may not be a site you visit every day unless you are a dedicated student of the language but I find it handy to know it is there for consultation on the many tricky questions of present-day grammar usage.

As a beginner language site, I would recommend the University of Minnesota site based on the Least Commonly Used Languages project.

This, of course, cannot be used on its own as a language learning site. The stimulating exercises can only enhance your own prior learning.

I particularly liked the photo exercises. Relatively fast loading, there are three types but the ideas behind them could easily be transferred for class teaching and learning purposes.

In one set, you choose the best caption for two similar photos.

In the second, you are again given a photo and asked to fit several given words into the blanks inserted in a short description of the picture.

For the third set, you progress to writing your own description of the given photos including the several suggested words.

It is an interesting way of extending vocabulary and grammatical skills. The only problem might be that you need someone to check your short captions.

The University also publishes a Virtual Photo Album with thumbnail reproductions of its photo collections. Alongside each photo is a suggestion for its use in topic discussion or writing work, with grammar suggestions in a separate column.
