Voyages of Discovery Part 1

There is a wealth of excellent photographs of this monument on the web. Try "http://srd.yahoo.com/goo/%22Padrao+dos+d..." where every aspect of the monument is covered, down to the dimensions and if you click on figuras the name of each carved figure with its position in line.

Travel writer and photographer Jim Steinhart, who worked for a while as manager with the transport and environment ministries of the Canadian government includes some brilliant photographs on his site at "http://www.planetware.com/photos/P/LSDIS... ".

But my favourite must be "http://www.imasy.or.jp/~ohinata/e_portug..." for several reasons. Although it is entitled Sean's Home Page, the heading "risbon" and the fact that a Japanese character display is suggested kind of give the game away.

The character display is unnecessary for the set of Lisbon photographs. Not professional, they are nevertheless really detailed and dovetail into a memorable overall impression of the site, the monument as a whole and the setting.

The slightly idiosyncratic English captions only add to the charm.

Padrões ( pronounced padroingsh were the symbolic stones bearing Portuguese shields which the early sailors left at the entrance of newly discovered rivers.

Another modern padrão on the Tagus is that erected to commemorate the life of Portugal's most famous fadista, Amália Rodrígues.
