Interview with Terri Nunn of Berlin: Part 1

Berlin was one of the pioneers of new wave and electronic music in the early 1980s. The band was formed in Los Angeles in the late 1970s by John Crawford, and Terri Nunn joined Berlin as their lead singer in 1979. Nunn had been a teenage actress, appearing in TV shows such as Lou Grant, Barnaby Jones, T.J. Hooker and Vegas. Their first E.P., 1982's Pleasure Victim caused a stir with its controversial single "Sex (I'm A...)", and the marketing of Nunn as a sex kitten.

1984's Love Life had the radio and MTV hit "No More Words", but Berlin's third release, 1986's Count Three and Pray was a commercial disappointment, although the album was praised by the critics, and contained the number one single "Take My Breath Away" from the movie Top Gun.

Shortly thereafter the band broke up and Nunn went solo, releasing 1992's Moment of Truth. In 1999 she reformed the band and went on tour, which resulted in the 2000 live CD Sacred and Profane. The current version of Berlin includes Terri Nunn (lead vocals), Dallan Baumgarten (guitar), Mitchell Sigman (keyboards, guitar, bass, vocals), Chris Olivas (drums, percussion), and Linda Dalziel (vocals). They've just released their first full-length studio CD in 16 years, Voyeur, which includes a collaboration with Billy Corgan.

I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Terri Nunn about Berlin old and new, and their latest CD. She was a delight to interview. She's intelligent, passionate, funny, and never afraid to speak her mind. I hope you enjoy reading this interview as much as I did conducting it:

Chad Bowar: How did you get started in acting?

Terri Nunn: My mother took me to a commercial agency. I was one of those kids who had to have something to do. My mom took me to an agent who was a friend of a friend, and I tried out. She took me on, and from there she got me some television auditions, and I got roles. I was working a lot.

I understand you were offered a role on the TV show Dallas?

Yes. That was the turning point that kicked me into Berlin. They called, said we have this show, a 7 year contract, a busload of money, and we want you for this role. My decision at that moment was this is either my life from now on, or I'm going to pursue my music dream that I've been putting off. I gave myself a year to get something going with music, and it took me exactly a year to find John Crawford and Berlin.
