Bruce Dickinson - The Best Of

For over 20 years he's been one of the most recognizable voices in heavy metal as the lead singer of Iron Maiden, and for the past 10 years as a solo artist. Dickinson's solo work is represented in The Best Of, a varied collection ranging from heavy Maiden-like anthems to more mainstream pop/rock songs. It's a great selection of tracks that shows the wide diversity in Dickinson's solo career. There's also a limited edition double CD set available that has an extra disc of rarities and live songs. The quality of the unreleased material and the little or no additional cost makes it well worth the effort to find the double CD set.

Annette Farrington - Azure, Wonder & Lust

Boston's Annette Farrington is one of those artists that defies easy classification. Her music is rhythmic and ethereal, with elements of folk, world music, rock, electronica, blues, and hip-hop. The songs on Azure, Wonder & Lust sound like Enigma meets the Cocteau Twins, and Farrington's soprano voice could be compared to Kate Bush, and in her lower range sounds a bit like Aimee Mann and Dido crossed with Alanis Morisette. Her voice is expressive and warm, and she has the range and diversity to sing in a wide range of styles and keys. The fusion of her vocals, lyrics, and the eclectic and unique musical arrangements make Azure, Wonder & Lust a very compelling listen.

Garbage - Beautifulgarbage

With their third release, Garbage has created their most diverse and entertaining CD to date. Beautifulgarbage moves from 60's girl group harmonies to trip-hop to 80's new wave to pure pop. Shirley Manson is a versatile singer, and she drops some of her swagger and anger on this CD, giving a glimpse of vulnerability underneath her tough exterior. Producer/drummer Butch Vig's arrangements are flawless, as usual. Beautifulgarbage is a highly enjoyable pop/rock CD.

Halfcocked - The Last Star

Boston's Halfcocked is three genres in one: 70's arena rock, 80's glam metal, and 90's alternative rock. Take Cheap Trick, Vixen, and Veruca Salt, put them in a blender, and you've got Halfcocked. The Last Star is full of anthems with an edge. The songs are melodic metal with soaring choruses and guitar solos, but they are also infused with a punk rock attitude. Halfcocked
