Puddle of Mudd – Come Clean

Limp Bizkit’s Fred Durst actually knows good music when he hears it. He signed Staind, to his Flawless Records label, and his latest discovery is Puddle of Mudd. The group has one foot in Seattle and the other in a mosh pit. They have that modern alt-rock sound, but are also heavily influenced by grunge bands like Alice in Chains, Nirvana and Soundgarden. The lead singer’s voice sounds like a cross between Eddie Vedder and Kurt Cobain. Come Clean has some of that early 90’s angst, but there’s enough brightness and clever lyrics to avoid being a cliché.

Various Artists – Name Your Poison

Poison was and is one of the most popular “hair bands” ever. Many of their contemporaries lend their talents to this tribute CD. The singers and musicians on Name Your Poison are from other pop metal bands such as Pretty Boy Floyd, Tuff, Every Mother’s Nightmare, Ratt, Warrant, Dangerous Toys, Tyketto and Dirty Looks. The songs are pretty faithful to the originals, with enough of a twist to make them interesting. If you’re a fan of Poison, you’ll enjoy this tribute CD.

Various Artists – Twisted Forever

Some big names lend their skills to this Twisted Sister tribute CD. Twisted Sister was known for outrageous costumes, funny videos on MTV, and blues-based metal music. There’s a great combination of artists on Twisted Forever, including metal legends Motorhead and Anthrax, fellow 80’s rockers Joan Jett and Sebastian Bach, modern hard rockers Nashville Pussy, Overkill, Cradle of Filth and Sevendust, pop rockers Lit and Nine Days, and even hip-hop godfather Chuck D. Twisted Sister themselves even appear on their own tribute CD, contributing a cover version of the AC/DC song “Sin City”. Twisted Forever is a fun and very well done tribute.
