Krystal – Me & My Piano

In a music world full of vapid and disposable teen pop artists and music, Krystal is different. The 19-year-old Indiana native adds a little more substance to the genre. Make no mistake, this is teen pop music, but Krystal wrote several songs on the CD and plays piano, flute, drums, guitar and bass. She is the first artist on the Backstreet Boys’ new label, and opened for the band on their recent tour. The daughter of a minister, Krystal grew up singing in the church, and that influence is reflected in Me & My Piano. There is a gospel-influenced duet with the Backstreet Boys, and the lyrics of several songs have spiritual overtones. Her voice is a mixture of Christina Aguilera and Samantha Mumba, and Krystal is an artist that will have success long after she is a teenager.

Nathan Larson – Jealous God

Former Shudder To Think guitarist Nathan Larson’s first solo album is not what you’d expect. There is no art rock or low-fi to be heard. Jealous God is a slice of pure pop, with a soul and gospel influence. The songs are highly melodic, extremely catchy and slickly produced. Larson’s voice and singing style are reminiscent of Elvis Costello, and he moves gracefully from torch songs to uptempo pop. There’s also an excellent duet with his new wife, Cardigans lead singer Nina Persson. Jealous God is a dazzling debut from a very talented artist.

Lonestar – I’m Already There

Lonestar is a band with massive crossover appeal. Their last album had the huge hit single “Amazed”, but top to bottom, I’m Already There is a much stronger effort. On their fifth album, they have mastered the combination of pop, rock and country. Fans of all these genres will find something to like on I’m Already There. Lead singer Richie McDonald’s voice is perfect for the pop/country ballads, but he can also rock with the best of them. It’s a given that Lonestar will hit the top of the country charts, but this CD moves them right in the middle of mainstream music, too.
