This is not your typical animated movie soundtrack. There is no Phil Collins, no Randy Newman, no Elton John. Instead, it’s filled with rock and alternative artists. There are established artists like Smashmouth, who do a killer version of the Monkee’s song “I’m A Believer” along with their hit single “All Star”; Baha Men; Eels; Rufus Wainwright and The Proclaimers. There are also some up and coming artists, such as Jason Wade of Lifehouse, Dana Glover, and another Carter, 14 year old Leslie, the sister of Backstreet Boy Nick and teen sensation Aaron. Shrek is a diverse and entertaining soundtrack, just like the movie.
Weezer’s debut in 1994 made them one of the top alternative rock bands, but their 1996 follow up was a disappointment. Most people thought the band would disappear into obscurity. Five years later, Weezer has returned from the dead with a terrific new CD. Lead singer and songwriter Rivers Cuomo shows a wide range of styles on The Green Album, mixing 70’s rock, punk, surf, folk and pop. Ric Ocasek, who produced Weezer’s first album, is back at the controls, and brought out the best in the band. The Green Album is short, clocking in at less than 30 minutes, and sweet, with absolutely no filler.
His voice is a cross between Eddie Vedder and Tom Petty, and his songs are very radio friendly. Seattle based Alex Woodard has also assembled an all-star band, including members of Gigolo Aunts, Fountains of Wayne, The Posies and Sky Cries Mary. Woodard’s voice is soulful, his lyrics are poignant, and the band is top-notch. The music is modern rock with touches of blues, adult alternative, country and pop. Nowhere Near Here is a marvelous CD from an up and coming artist with a bright future.
