Breaking the Metal Rules - Part 1There are thousands of music zines being published each month, and Metal Rules! is one of the best I’ve ever read. One thing that makes it stand out from the crowd is the interviews. They are published completely unedited, which can make for a very entertaining read. It also has a very distinctive attitude and style, which comes from its editor and founder, Jeff Rappaport. In the following interview, you’ll find out what Metal Rules! is, what goes into publishing a zine, some of Jeff’s best and worst interviews, his opinions on today’s music scene, and many other interesting topics. Chad Bowar, Suite 101.com:How and why did Metal Rules! start? Jeff Rappaport, Metal Rules! Editor: Metal Rules! began in 1998 on the spur of the moment. My friend had put out a zine in the 1980's and he showed it to me. I thought, "I could do that." The chance of getting free CDs, concert tickets and meeting my idols was quite appealing to me. The first issue looked like a piece of crap. I had no idea what I was doing. It was 22 pages and it featured interviews with Orcus and Kane Roberts (that big muscle dude from Alice Cooper). The interviews were total crap but the reviews and other stuff were very strong or so I like to think. Is it your full time job, or do you have a day job, too? It's fast becoming a full time job, especially when you to type out huge interviews in the middle of the day. Next time call me.....Ha ha! But really, it's a lot of work. More than any one can ever imagine. There is all the writing, mail, dealing with distributors, labels etc. etc. I also do Ebay and I'm raising two children while my wife works. (Yup. I'm Mr. Mom) So, in actuality I have three full-time jobs. No, I don't sleep. How has Metal Rules! evolved over the years? It was 22 photocopied pages with issue #1 and available in the comic book store that I worked and through the mail. For issue #10 (out by the time you read this) it will be available in thousands of stores worldwide and it will be 116 pro-printed pages with a full color glossy cover. Be sure to contact me if you can't find it in your area. I can direct you to where to find it or tell you how your retailer can order it.
