Phillips is the former lead singer for Toad the Wet Sprocket, who broke up in 1997, and his first solo album doesn’t stray far from his old band’s sound. He is a gifted songwriter, writing intelligent and ironic lyrics and strong melodies. Even though the subject matter of his songs can be fairly dark, his singing style and voice keeps them from sounding depressing. Abulum is a well crafted CD, and ones that fans of Toad the Wet Sprocket and folk rock will enjoy.
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band – Live in New York City
It’s impossible to satisfy every Springsteen fan with any live recording, because he is so prolific, and it would take a 12 hour concert to fit in all the songs people want to hear. This one comes pretty darn close. Live in New York City is the first live CD to accurately capture the essence of a Springsteen concert. The 2 CD set has two new songs, including the explosive and controversial “American Skin”. The E Street Band, back together after more than 10 years, sounds fantastic, and prove they are one of the best live bands ever. Live in New York City is not a throwaway, contract fulfilling CD. It’s an example of what all concert recordings should aspire to be.
English born and current New Yorker Amanda Thorpe has captured that “rainy day feeling” on Mass. It’s haunting, moody and introspective. Her singing style and voice is similar to Aimee Mann or Dido. Thorpe’s music is folk based, with a hint of jazz and trip-hop. The songs on Mass are a wonderful combination of interesting lyrics, different atmospheres and moods on each song, and Thorpe’s evocative vocals. The production is also first rate.
That does it for April’s reviews. I don’t know if it was because the quality of music was lower this month, or our standards were higher, but only 10 CDs made the cut. Start a discussion below and give your opinion on this month’s reviews.
