April 2001's Best New CDs

© Chad Bowar

Welcome to the April reviews. Here’s how we select which CDs are featured. Out of the large number of CDs released each month, we listen to dozens and dozens of them and select what we believe are the best, and feature them here. The great thing about pop music is that it’s such a wide and inclusive genre, which is represented in the reviews. Popular music includes pop, rock, dance, country, alternative, metal, punk and more. You’ll read reviews about superstars on major labels, but you’ll also hear about brand new artists, or artists on small independent labels that are very talented and deserve to be heard. We’re always interested in your feedback, so if you have a comment or question on the reviews, Send an email ! Let’s get to this month’s best new CDs, in alphabetical order:

Emma Bunton – A Girl Like Me

Baby Spice has released a solo CD, and it is far better than those released by Geri Halliwell and Mel C. Bunton has a nice voice, and she is surprisingly versatile. The songs on A Girl Like Me range from Shania-sounding country pop to folk to mainstream pop and even a Latin-flavored song. The songs are more acoustic based than the Spice Girls, and there’s an excellent cover of the Edie Brickell song “What I Am”. The Spice Girls may be over, but Emma Bunton’s solo career is just taking off. A Girl Like Me is currently available only as an import in the US, and will be released here later this year.

Creeper Lagoon – Take Back the Universe…and Give Me Yesterday

San Francisco based Creeper Lagoon’s second full-length CD is the one that’s going to make them big stars. Take Back The Universe is guitar rock at it’s finest. Their music is melodic without being mellow or melodramatic; intense without being strident or unfocused; and the hooks are undeniable. You’ll be hearing Creeper Lagoon on rock radio a lot in the next year, and MTV won’t be far behind. They’re polished, talented, and headed for the top of the charts.

Ani DiFranco – Revelling/Reckoning

The queen of indie pop keeps her title with a knockout performance on this 2 CD set. Reckoning is the more mellow of the two, with more acoustic folk, ballads and blues. Revelling is more diverse and more upbeat, with everything from jazz to funk to punk. Both CDs are marked by DiFranco’s trademark deeply personal songwriting, wicked hooks and outstanding arrangements. Revelling/Reckoning is one of the best CDs of DiFranco’s long career.
