Patti Rothberg made a big splash on the music scene with her 1996 debut album Between the 1 and 9. Critics and fans raved about the album, and her songs were played on radio stations of many different formats all over the country. Her personal lyrics and eclectic mix of folk, rock and blues attracted many fans.
Rothberg is a New York City native, and began her musical career in the playing in the subways of New York. She was signed to a record deal, and the title Between the 1 and 9 is a reference to the subway. In addition to being a skilled singer and musician, Rothberg is also a talented artist. She attended the Parsons School of Design and majored in illustration. Her artwork was featured on the cover of her first album. After the release of Between the 1 and 9, Rothberg toured all over the world with musicians like the Wallflowers, Black Crowes, Garbage, Chris Isaak and Paul Westerberg. A few years ago EMI Records, her label, closed down, leaving Rothberg without label support. For the past couple of years, she’s been writing, playing in the New York area and gathering material for her next CD.
Candelabra Cadabra has just been released. Rothberg decided to return to her indie roots and release it as part of the cropduster.com cooperative. I recently had the chance to find out what Patti’s been up to:
Patti Rothberg: I toured the world (well not the WHOLE thing, but lots of it
including Japan, Spain, Germany, Croatia etc! I opened for many amazing acts
and had tons of fun. That was when I was on EMI America, before they closed
up shop.
After being told by some "majors" that "this just isn't what we're doing right now.." I decided to do what I'm doing right now, regardless! I had lots of encouragement to go indie, from other recording artists who were successful, and had done the major label trip, too. The main inspiration to do so was Freddie Katz, my significant producer (and other). Candelabra Cadabra is a very catchy title. What does it signify? Candelabra Cadabra is about the magic that you create idiomatically for yourself in your imagination (idiomagic!)
