March 2001's Best New CDs - Part 1

© Chad Bowar

Welcome to the March reviews. Here’s how we select which CDs are featured each month. Out of the large number of CDs released each month, we listen to dozens and dozens of them and select what we believe are the best, and feature them here. The great thing about pop music is that it’s such a wide and inclusive genre, which is represented in the reviews. Popular music includes pop, rock, dance, country, alternative, metal, punk and more. You’ll read reviews about superstars on major labels, but you’ll also hear about brand new artists, or artists on small independent labels that are very talented and deserve to be heard. We’re always interested in your feedback, so if you have a comment or question on the reviews, Send an email! Let’s get to this month’s best new CDs, in alphabetical order:

Aerosmith – Just Push Play

Aerosmith has taken over the production reins on their latest CD, and the result is a little harder edge, but still smooth and polished. Steven Tyler can sing about sexual innuendo better than anyone alive, and Joe Perry’s guitar work is better than ever on Just Push Play. This is the first time ever that Aerosmith has produced one of their own recordings, and they mix their usual hard rock with funk and even throw in a little techno for flavor. Even though it rocks harder than the past few Aerosmith albums, there are plenty of radio and MTV friendly hits. Even after 13 albums and nearly 30 years of making music, Aerosmith is still having fun and rocking like they are still in their 20’s.

Sasha Alexander – Dedicated To…

German born Sasha Alexander is a superstar in Europe. He’s had several hits all over the world, and his songs have been featured in the TV shows “Dawson’s Creek” and “Beverly Hills 90210”. He’s poised for a major breakthrough in the US. His brand of music isn’t groundbreaking by any means, but it is hook-laden and very melodic. Alexander is versatile, gliding smoothly from dancy europop to R&B to reggae to slow ballads. His voice reminds me of the lead singer of Breathe, Martin Fry from ABC and Paul Young. Dedicated To… is a combination of his 2 European albums, and will definitely add the US to the countries Alexander has conquered.
