Welcome to the February reviews. If you’re new to the site, here’s how we select which CDs are featured each month. Out of the large number of CDs released each month, we select what we believe are the best, and feature them on the Suite 101.com Pop Music Site. Pop music is a wide and inclusive genre, which is represented in the reviews. Popular music includes pop, rock, dance, alternative, metal, punk and more. You’ll read reviews about superstars on major labels here, but you’ll also hear about brand new artists, or artists on small independent labels that are very talented. We’re always interested in your feedback, so if there’s a CD you’d like to see reviewed, or if you have a comment on one of the reviews, Send an email ! Let’s get to this month’s best new CDs, in alphabetical order:
Blessid Union of Souls – The Singles
Blessid Union of Souls are one of the most underrated bands around. They’ve had a few hit singles, like “I Believe” and “Hey Leonardo”, and should have had several more. The Singles collects the best tracks from their 3 CDs, a couple of soundtrack songs, and also a couple new songs, a remix and a live version of “Hey Leonardo”. The band calls their music “rural soul”, positive songs with a mix of pop, r&b and folk. Blessid Union of Souls songs have catchy choruses, memorable hooks and an uplifting message. The Singles is an excellent collection of this talented band’s best material.
In the early 90’s, teenager Tevin Campbell was touted as the next Michael Jackson. Of course, that didn’t happen, but he’s had several hits over the years, all collected in this greatest hits package. It’s interesting to hear Campbell’s voice and style evolve from the teen pop of his first CD in 1991 to the smooth R&B and soul of his 1999 release. He has a pure sounding voice, and the production from producers such as Babyface and Narada Michael Walton is flawless. The bulk of the material (7 songs) is from 1993’s I’m Ready, with 4 songs from his debut T.E.V.I.N., 3 from 1996’s Back To The World, and only one from his 1999 self titled CD. Campbell hasn’t even hit 30 yet, so I have a feeling this won’t be the last greatest hits CD from this talented crooner.
