January 2001 CD Reviews

Michael Sweet. Sweet hasn’t lost his faith, or his ability to rock. Truth is his third solo album, and by far his most eclectic. Sweet’s powerful voice and distinctive falsetto moves easily from country rock to alternative rock to power ballads. The songs on Truth range from a soft piano ballad to an all out metal-rap rampage. It’s an interesting and personal musical chronicle of Sweet’s struggles with his faith, doubts and pain.

Tyrants In Therapy – Meet The Tyrants In Therapy

This is a difficult group to categorize in one short paragraph. Here are some of the many different words that describe the music of the LA duo Tyrants in Therapy: original, quirky, punk, inventive, controversial, witty, ironic, dance, wacky, intelligent. Meet The Tyrants in Therapy is all of that and more. The Tyrants blend dance music with a punk attitude and a lot of humor. They’ve been around since 1984 and have perfected what they call “Punk Cabaret”. It makes you laugh, it gets your feet moving, it might make you angry, it definitely makes you think, and it’s a great entertainment experience.

Various Artists – Millennium Love Songs

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, this is the perfect CD to set that romantic mood. It’s a mix of love songs from the 80’s through today. From the 80’s there’s Chicago, Foreigner, Cyndi Lauper, Genesis, and even a love song from Dire Straits. From the 90’s and today there’s Paula Cole, Edwin McCain, Hootie and the Blowfish and Donna Lewis. It isn’t Barry White, but Millennium Love Songs will get you feeling the love in the room.

Various Artists – Save The Last Dance Soundtrack

“Save The Last Dance” opened as the number 1 movie in the USA. It’s a teen appeal movie, and the soundtrack is targeted at that same audience. It’s a power packed collection of pop, R&B and hip-hop. There’s a mix of established artists like Lucy Pearl (with Snoop Dogg and Q-Tip), Ice Cube, K-Ci and JoJo, Montell Jordan and Pink, along with talented newcomers like X-2-C. Fredro Starr from Onyx and Jill Scott perform the movie’s theme song “Shining Through”, which samples Cyndi Lauper’s “True Colors”. Save The Last Dance Soundtrack is a polished slice of urban music.
