Best of 2000

Confederate General John B. Gordon
As we come to the end of the year, and look ahead to the real beginning of the new Millennium, it’s time to recap the best of 2000. Teen pop continued to rule the charts, as Britney, Backstreet Boys, 98 Degrees, N Sync and the rest dominated the airwaves. There are signs that the genre is slowing down, and the emergence of artists like Macy Gray and Vertical Horizon was a positive sign that other types of music will be popular in the next year. Here’s one editor’s opinion of the best singles and CDs of the year 2000:

10 Best CDs of 2000

10. Nina Gordon – Tonight And The Rest Of My Life

Former Veruca Salt member Nina Gordon has delivered a spectacular debut solo CD. Gordon was the more pop oriented member of Veruca Salt, and her pop sensibilities shine through on this CD. She is an excellent songwriter, weaving complex and interesting storylines over catchy melodies of many different styles and delivers a powerful vocal performance. Tonight And The Rest Of My Life is one of the best CDs of the year.

9. Kasey Chambers - The Captain

Kasey Chambers is Americana music at its best. That's pretty ironic, considering Chambers is from Australia. Her twangy melodies, distinctive voice and well written lyrics stand out from the pack. She's not quite country, not quite folk, and not quite pop. Instead, The Captain is a wonderful combination of all those forms of music, plus a couple more. Kasey Chambers is a bright new star on the music scene.

8. Paul Simon – You’re The One

Paul Simon is a legend. He’s been making great music for over 30 years. He’s sold millions of CDs, won numerous awards, and has had dozens of hit singles. He hasn’t lost a step. You’re The One is a nuanced, subtle, highly personal and autobiographical CD. Simon has a gift for lyrics and the perfect pop hook, which are in abundance on this CD. At the age of 58, with a wife and family, his songs are reflective and full of wisdom. They range from pop to jazz to world music to folk. He may or may not be crazy, but he still is a pop virtuoso after all these years.
