August CD Reviews (Artists F-Z)

400 Horses - 400 Horses

400 Horses is a British classic rock/melodic rock band. They sound a bit like Whitesnake with a little Electric Boys thrown in. They definitely have talent. One of the band members has 2 music degrees, an award for most promising songwriter for 1998, and the BBC Young Composer award for 1998. 400 Horses' debut CD is filled with guitar driven rock anthems. The songs are well written, melodic, and have some excellent guitar work. 400 Horses won't change the world, but it is an enjoyable rock CD. For more info, visit http://www.a2records.com/horses.html

Gabrielle - Rise

The British pop/soul singer Gabrielle hit big in the US several years ago with the smash hit "Dreams". Her second CD didn't do much on the US charts. Her current CD, Rise has already sold over a million copies in the UK and is now being released here in the US. If US listeners have any taste it will sell at least that many here. It's a versatile and extremely catchy CD. Gabrielle ranges from dance floor diva to pop crooner to soul singer with ease. The highlight of Rise is the title track, which samples Bob Dylan's "Knocking on Heaven's Door". It's the first time he's ever let his music be sampled, and if Bob Dylan likes Gabrielle, who am I to disagree! Her official site is http://www.gabrielle.co.uk/

Ice-T - Greatest Hits: The Evidence

Ice-T is the godfather of gangsta rap, the original OG. He was way ahead of his Time in combining hip-hop and metal, and did it a lot better than bands like Limp Bizkit. The CD kicks off with the song that got the whole West Coast thing going, "6 'N The Morning" and continues through his greatest hits, a couple of soundtrack songs, and some lesser known but quality tracks. It's about time Ice-T released a greatest hits CD, and this is a great collection from one of the pioneers of hip-hop. See http://www.atomicpop.com/icet

Maria McKee - Ultimate Collection

It's about time. Maria McKee has one of the best voices in music, and has finally released a greatest hits collection containing both Lone Justice and solo material. McKee was the lead singer of the 80's band Lone Justice, who released two albums. McKee began her solo career in 1989, and has released three solo albums since then. Her voice is powerful and angelic, with a hint of country mixed with blues, rock and folk. In addition to several singles, Ultimate Collection has a few rarities, such as a live version of Lou Reed's "Sweet Jane" with Bono from U2 on vocals, and an acoustic demo version of the number one UK smash "Show Me Heaven." This is a must own for all Lone Justice and McKee fans, and a great way to discover a great musical artist if you're not familiar with her.
