Part 2

Here's part 2 of my interview with the outspoken keyboardist and co-producer of Blessid Union of Souls, C.P. Roth. Read what C.P. has to say about the music industry, Napster and what music he's listening to now. If you missed Part 1, you can read it here: http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/3985...

Who are some of the favorite bands and artists that you have toured with, opened for, or had open for you?

C.P. Roth: We love Edwin McCain!! And our gal Lisa Loeb who we haven't seen in a while. The guys in 98 Degrees are totally cool too (we've even been doing some writing with them!) And LFO are very nice guys. Of the newer acts this year our pick to click is Splender! Totally cool dudes to the Max! Also we're big fans of Mandy Moore just cause she's so damn nice! The two bands that consistently blow us away are Smashmouth and Tonic. But I gotta tell ya we've seen Hanson on a few of these radio gigs and they are serious! Plus they are great guys as well!

We've had a ton of great "local" openers at out shows, but the two that stand out the most are Brownie Mary and the most rockin band I've seen in years, Detroit's own Face (Go see this group. They rock!)

How are you guys using the internet as a promotional and communication tool?

Well, we have a great website which we're always trying to improve. Fun fact: The site was partially designed by the guitarist for Wild Cherry of "Play That Funky Music White Boy" fame! And we do answer the fan email that comes in to BOUSmail@aol.com

What will be the long term effect of the internet on the industry? Will record companies disappear eventually?

Well, you gotta keep in mind that there's really only five record companies at all anymore, and all of them are either owned by or share ownership with a major manufacturer of entertainment delivery media (like Sony for instance). So all of these guys are going to want whatever standard they employ to sell music to be theirs! The bad news is that most of the guys in the record biz could screw up a wet dream, so the idea that these guys are gonna figure out a way take back the reins on what's going on now (with things like Napster, etc) is kinda silly to me. Ultimately, we'll all be on the one real label: NAPSTER RECORDS! (Except Metallica.)
