June 2000 CD Reviews

Olive - Trickle

Olive's second release is an excellent dance CD. Their music has been described as trip-hop, trip-pop and electronica. Unlike a lot of dance music, Olive actually has substantial lyrics to go along with their swirling melodies and lead singer Ruth-Ann's ethereal vocals.

In addition to their original songs, there is a cover version of 10cc's "I'm Not In Love", which also appears on the Next Best Thing soundtrack. Keyboardist Tim Kellett says "There are only two reasons to cover a song. One is to improve upon it, and the other is to completely change it. The original version is a classic and can't be improved upon, but I think we succeeded in making a version that's all our own."

Trickle is a little more down-tempo that most dance CD's, but is lush, epic, and highly enjoyable.

Clapton is happy with the results. "The privilege of doing this album was knowing the B.B. would trust me. I'd been thinking about a couple of different directions,"says Clapton. "One was to try an unplugged thing because no one's ever heard B.B. play acoustic guitar. The other idea was to try to mix some old blues with more modern material. We were actually able to touch all those bases."

Riding With The King is a wonderful collaboration between two musical giants.

Dave Davies - Rock Bottom: Live At The Bottom Line

Dave Davies was one of the founders and the lead guitarist of the Kinks. They were one of the most influential bands of the 60's and 70's. Davies is in fine form on this live recording. His band rocks harder than the Kinks did, and his voice is more soulful than his brother Ray's.

This CD was recorded live at New York's legendary Bottom Line, and it's fun to hear Davies banter with the crowd and talk about some of his early days. Live At the Bottom Line features over 20 tracks and is a combination of
