June 2000 CD Reviews

Each month I review my favorite new CD's of the past 30 days. I listen to dozens of new releases each month, and only the best make the cut. It doesn't matter if it's on a major label, independent label, or no label at all. I just have to have it so I can listen to it! And if I don't have it, it can't be reviewed! If you are a record label, manager, publicist or musician and would like your new release considered for review, send it to me: Chad Bowar, Suite 101.com Pop Music Editor, PO Box 1723, Rapid City, SD 57709. Here are this month's best new CDs, in no particular order:

Bon Jovi - Crush

Bon Jovi has never gotten good reviews, but still managed to sell millions and millions of albums over the years. I'm not sure what the other critics have to say, but I really like Crush. It may not sell as many copies as Slippery When Wet, but it is a solid rock and roll album. Bon Jovi has made transition from a teen idol hair metal band to hard working rock and roll band. Richie Sambora is one of rock's most underrated guitarists, and his work on Crush is exceptional. Jon Bon Jovi is now also a movie star, but hasn't lost his musical touch.

Crush is a nice combination of hard rockers, arena anthems and power ballads. Bon Jovi's first album in five years hits the mark.

Various Artists - Lost 45's of the 70's and 80's

If there are some obscure songs from the 70's and 80's you've never been able to find on CD, there's a good chance they are on either The Lost 45's of the 70's and 80's Volume 1 or 2. Volume 1 features songs such as Tony Carey's "A Fine Fine Day", Steel Breeze's "You Don't Want Me Anymore", Van Stephenson's "Modern Day Delilah" and Rupert Holmes' "Him".

Volume 2 features 9 songs that have never before been released on CD, including "Sausalito Summernight" by Diesel. It's a song that made it to number 25 on the charts in 1981, and a song I've personally been searching for and never been able to even find on vinyl. There are some other lost classics too, such as "I Believe" by Chilliwack and "If You Remember Me" which hit number 17 on the charts in 1979 for Chris Thompson & Night. Both Lost 45's of the 70's and 80's are worthwhile additions to the collection of any diehard music fan.
