March 2000 CD Reviews

Each month I review my favorite new CD's of the past 30 days. I listen to dozens of new releases each month, and only the best make the cut. It doesn't matter if it's on a major label, independent label, or no label at all. I just have to have it so I can listen to it! And if I don't have it, it can't be reviewed! If you are a record label, manager, publicist or musician and would like your new release considered for review, send it to me: Chad Bowar, Suite 101.com Pop Music Editor, PO Box 1723, Rapid City, SD 57709. Here are this month's best new CDs, in no particular order:

Aimee Mann - Bachelor No. 2

This CD was a long time coming. A few years ago Mann submitted some of the songs on this CD to her record company, who rejected them for not being commercial enough. After a few years of wrangling, Mann bought back the master tapes, recorded some additional tracks and released this CD on her own label, SuperEgo Records.

It's good to have Mann back on the music scene again. After hearing nothing from her for several years, Mann fans had the Magnolia soundtrack a couple months back, and now Bachelor No. 2. Magnolia was one of the best albums of 1999, and Bachelor No. 2 is the best album so far this year. This CD was definitely worth waiting for. It is a masterpiece. Mann's plaintive voice and powerful lyrics make for a memorable listening experience.

Bachelor No. 2 is packed with quality songs such as "Nothing Is Good Enough", whose lyrics takes a jab at Mann's former record company: "It doesn't really help that you can never say what you're looking for, but you'll know it when you hear it."

Mann's husband, singer Michael Penn, also helps out on background vocals and guitar on a couple of tracks on the CD. Bachelor No. 2 is available only via the internet currently, with wide release at a later date. I'm not sure what Mann's former record company was smoking when they wouldn't accept this CD. 'N Sync - No Strings Attached

The past couple of years have been huge for boy bands, and 'N Sync has proved to be the biggest boy band of all. In its first week of release, No Strings Attached sold 2.4 million copies, smashing the old record of 1.1 million copies by their rivals, the Backstreet Boys.
