February 2000 CD Reviews

If you liked Steely Dan back then, you'll like them now. The band's members have changed over the years, but the constant has been the duo of Walter Becker and Donald Fagan. They are known for their attention to detail in the recording studio, and Two Against Nature is no exception. It is an extremely well produced and crafted album, but not overproduced. It's good to have Steely Dan back. To find out more about the band, visit their official website: http://www.steelydan.com

William Orbit - Pieces In A Modern Style
William Orbit is probably best known for his work with Madonna on her CD Ray Of Light. But he is a phenomenally talented and successful artist, writer and producer. Pieces In A Modern Style is a very unique album. It's a collection of classical songs by composers such as Beethoven, Vivaldi and Handel interpreted by Orbit. But fans will be surprised at how subtle and introspective these interpretations are. Orbit says, "It's just my own personal spin. I originally made it a form of meditation for myself and friends - something to record for relaxation and to play to chill out to - but more and more people connected with what I was doing."

There's also a bonus disc included that has a couple of remixes. That disc is more typically Orbit, with pulsating rhythms and a heavier sound. Pieces In A Modern Style isn't for the classical music fan at all. It's for the dance music fan that wants to expand their musical horizons. He does a masterful job of taking these classical songs and weaving and texturing modern electronic sounds into a sonic tapestry. For more information, visit http://www.williamorbit.com

Extreme - The Best Of Extreme: An Accidental Collocation of Atoms?

Extreme was never an easy group to categorize. They were at times rock and roll, progressive hard rock, funk metal, pop, acoustic and electric. That's what made them a great band, they kept surprising you with each new album. The Best Of chronicles their career from obscurity to enormous success.

Extreme was formed in 1985 in Boston, and went on to release 4 albums. Their first self-titled album was released in 1989 and didn't do a whole lot on the charts. That changed with their second album, Pornograffitti. It featured the number one hit "More Than Words" and the number 4 hit "Hole Hearted." The album went on to sell over 2 million copies
