January CD Reviews

Welcome to the first CD reviews of 2000! Each month I listen to dozens of new CDs and pick my favorites to review. If you are a record label or musician and would like your new release considered for review, send it to me: Chad Bowar, Suite 101.com Pop Music Editor, PO Box 1723, Rapid City, SD 57709. Here are this month's best new CDs, in no particular order:

Enuff Z'Nuff - Paraphernalia
You might remember Enuff Z'Nuff from the late 80's and early 90's. They had some great hit songs like "Fly High Michelle". They've been making music for 15 years, and their latest release is one of their best. Their brand of melodic guitar rock still sounds fresh after all these years. Parapahernalia features guest appearances by 3 Chicago guitar rock icons: Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick, James Young of Styx and Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins.

Lead singer Chip Z'Nuff enjoyed making the new album. "It's been a wonderful experience. We had a chance to have some fantastic musicians sit in with us. We recorded and produced all the songs completely by ourselves, and then at the end we looked at the record and decided that if we had three of the best guitar players here in Chicago come down and play with us, to show first of all that everything we'd done in the past wasn't futile, wasn't a lie, and could not be refuted, that would not be a bad thing. It would be something to show we are still vital as a band."

Enuff Z'Nuff, with a little help from their friends, have created a highly enjoyable CD, and one worth owning. For more information on the band, visit their official web site: http://www.enuffznuff.com

Tina Turner - Twenty Four Seven
Tina Turner is back, and she sounds better than ever. You saw her on the Super Bowl pregame show, and now you can hear her brand new album. Tina turns 60 later this year, but you would never know it by listening to this CD.

Twenty Four Seven is full of Turner's trademark passion and high octane soulful voice along with old-fashioned, irresistible pop songs. There's also a cameo from Bryan Adams on "Without You", and a never-before-recorded Bee Gees written song "I Will Be There".

She has been relaxing in Switzerland since her last album in 1996 and the immense world tour that followed. But now Turner is energized by another new challenge. "I got a break from the music world. I always need to detox from the business. But now I'm ready for it."
