August CD Reviews

© Chad Bowar

Each month I review my favorite new CD's of the past 30 days. It doesn't matter if it's on a major label, independent label, or no label at all. I just have to have it so I can listen to it! If you are a record label or musician and would like your new release considered for review, send it to me: Chad Bowar, Suite 101.com Pop Music Editor, PO Box 1723, Rapid City, SD 57709. There were a ton of great CDs in August. Because of the number of CDs reviewed, the reviews are a little shorter than usual. Here are this month's best new CDs, in no particular order:

Amanda Marshall--Tuesday's Child

Amanda Marshall should be a big star. She's a fantastic singer with a great big voice and great big hair. Her self-titled debut was one of the best albums of 1996, and the follow-up, Tuesday's Child is one of the best albums of 1999. The songs are filled with emotion and great hooks. You may have heard the single "Believe In You" in the trailer for the Kevin Costner movie, For Love of the Game.

If you haven't heard Amanda, you need to buy Tuesday's Child, and while you're at it, pick up her debut album, too. For more information, visit her official website: http://www.amandamarshall.com

Michael Aston's Gene Loves Jezebel--Love Lies Bleeding

Gene Loves Jezebel has been around since 1982, and were pioneers in the Gothic music scene. Originally Gene Loves Jezebel was made up of brothers Michael and Jay Aston. They split in the early 90's, with Jay continuing as Gene Loves Jezebel. They reformed in 1997, but once again have had an acrimonious parting of the ways.

Love Lies Bleeding is the musical result of the parting. Michael Aston's Gene Loves Jezebel is a continuation of that trademark Gene Loves Jezebel sound. You'll hear haunting, complex lyrics with pulsating melodies and a dark overtone. It's a very good album that gets better with each listen. Bell Book & Candle--Read My Sign

Bell Book & Candle is the first major pop group to come out of the former Soviet Bloc. The group is from East Berlin, and their debut album has gone platinum in Germany, Spain, Austria and Switzerland.

Lead singer Jana Gross' voice will jump out of your stereo speakers and grab your heart. She has a great delivery and a big vocal range. The band's influences include the Cure, Joy Division and Sisters of Mercy. There's a ballad written by Sheryl Crow, called "Destiny", that is one of the strongest songs on the record. Bell Book & Candle is poised on the brink of stardom, and you can say you knew about them from the beginning. For more information, visit their label's website: http://www.blackbirdusa.com
