Discipline Global Mobile, home to such artists as King Crimson, California Guitar Trio and Bill Bruford's Earthworks, has announced the upcoming launch of BootlegTV.com, the first venue for the sale of live music over the Internet. BootlegTV.com will offer live concerts online on a pay-per-view basis.
BootlegTV.com will debut the first week in November. Concerts from participating artists, such as King Crimson, will be available within twenty-four hours of the actual event. This will enable viewers in the U.K., for example, to experience the same live show as those fans that attended in the U.S. Each concert will be available for viewing either for a specified period of time or for unlimited viewing, depending on the fee paid. Pricing structure and means of payment are yet to be announced. According to David Singleton, DGM Label Manager, "BootlegTV.com offers a complete new trading model for the record industry by creating a significant new revenue stream in an area now mostly used for promotion. At the same time, it provides fans access to a vast, new, and ever-changing catalog of music." Microsoft Windows Media Technologies 4.0 will not only allow BootlegTV.com to present CD-quality download and streaming music with files half the size of equivalent MP3 files, but will also provide the site with a Digital Rights Management system that allows copyright owners to generate incremental revenue from the electronic distribution of music and video. "Windows Media Technologies 4.0 is setting the standard for CD-quality audio over the Internet," said Kevin Unangst, Lead Product Manager, Streaming Media Division, Microsoft Corp. "In addition, Microsoft is providing companies like Discipline Global Mobile with the most widely available and proven digital rights management system on the market today." DGM Live has already entered into a strategic relationship with Microsoft. A performance by King Crimson will be featured as the first downloadable concert in secure format from Windowsmedia.com in conjunction with the official launch of WMT 4.0. "Live performance is, potentially, the most immediate way of presenting music to its audience," states DGM's Robert Fripp. "The growth of widespread bootlegging demonstrates the interest taken in live music, even where performances are poorly recorded. BootlegTV.com will aim to legitimately meet this demand and satisfy the requirements of the performer, the audience and the industry." DGM is currently in negotiations with several other artists to secure the rights to their live performances for BootlegTV.com. Go To Page: 1
