Hugo Ferreira (Tantric) Interview

The second album is always the hardest. Tantric's first album was very successful, selling almost a million copies and spawning the number one rock single "Breakdown", the top 10 hit "Astounded," and the top 20 hit "Mourning." They toured with 3 Doors Down, Creed, Kid Rock, Coldplay, Staind and many more. They also appeared on all the talk shows and their songs appeared in movies and TV shows.

Tantric emerged from the ashes of Days Of The New. Guitarists Todd Whitener, bass player Jesse Vest and drummer Matt Taul from that band found vocalist Hugo Ferreira and formed the band. Tantric's second album, After We Go is produced by Toby Wright (Korn, Alice In Chains) who also produced their debut. The album also contains a cover version of Fleetwood Mac's "The Chain," which has an interesting story behind it that's talked about below. The new album comes with a lot of expectations, and having heard the album, I think it will surpass the first. It's harder, more mature, and still very radio-friendly.

Tantric's lead singer, Hugo Ferreira, is a great frontman. I've seen Tantric live, and he is a charismatic and entertaining singer. He's the same offstage. I recently spoke with him via telephone as the band was opening for 3 Doors Down. Hugo had to pause periodically to give some guff to 3 Doors Down's lead signer, Brad Arnold, who was in the room. After We Go will be released on February 24th.

Chad Bowar: How would you compare the sound of After We Go to Tantric's first album?

Hugo Ferreira: It's definitely a Tantric record. I think it has more balls. You hear it, you know it's us. There's a lot of intricate harmonies. It's heavier, but we still maintain the stuff we had on the last record. It's also the band's fifth year together, and there's some musical maturity there.

You must have been happy with Toby Wright's work on the last album to bring him back again as the producer.

We were under the state of mind that if it ain't broke, don't fix it. He did us right the first time, plus we're a strange bunch of fellas. Our personalities are very different from each others. He already knew everything about us. It was comfortable. We knew what to expect from each other. I'm thrilled with the way the record turned out.

How did you decide to cover Fleetwood Mac's "The Chain"?

The label wanted us to do a cover. I was sitting around with all the guys in the hotel room. I said the first song that comes on the radio we're gonna cover. The first song was "The Chain." Thank God it wasn't "It's Raining Men." (laughs) That would have been bad.
